Starting a business is no easy feat. It takes dedication, passion, and perseverance to be a true entrepreneur. These qualities are not often used to describe pre-teens, but 11-year-old Alaina Davis is on a mission to make STEM more exciting and accessible for all youth.

Effingham County native Alaina is the is the Owner of STEM Powered Kits, a company that sells curated science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) kits paired with complementary instructional videos. Each kit is carefully designed to create a hands-on learning experience for various age groups ranging from kits for younger, elementary school children to more advanced kits requiring skillsets seen in high school youth.

“I really like science, and I wanted my company to make science and STEM more fun for every age group,” said Alaina. The kits are designed to support and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in users. Alaina ultimately decided to start her business in May of 2021 because she believes the world needs innovation and problem-solving skills now more than ever. Her motto is “Today is a great day to learn something new” and her mission is to continually grow and share her learning experiences with others while inspiring future innovators. Examples of kits available are a Balloon Powered Race Car project and a Solar Powered Race Car project. Of the kits available on her site currently, Alaina says her favorite is the Electrical Circuit Kit, which initially inspired the start of her business.

Two of the kits include a Balloon Powered Race Car (L) and a Solar Powered Race Car (R).

The idea for a business came about when Alaina was working on a school project for the Georgia Cyber Academy, an online charter school based out of Atlanta. “She had a science project, and they were going over electrical circuits…I posted the video she made on the electrical circuits and there was an overwhelming response,” said her mother Zakiya Brown. As the Co-founder of Legacy Branding, a web design and creative branding agency, Zakiya recognized the entrepreneurial spirit in her daughter, and after several weeks of consideration and discussion, helped Alaina launch the company. “I try to make it fun while teaching her the aspects of business. Even when we are looking for kits or materials, I am showing her how to find the right prices and how much she needs to sell [them] for.” Alaina says that her mother’s startup experience also motivated her. “Seeing my mom work on websites everyday made me want to start my own business,” said Alaina.

As for future plans, Alaina’s goal is to add a wholesale option to her venture and continue to grow the next generation of innovators by fostering creative confidence and encouraging kids to THINK BIG!
