Savannah and The Creative Coast offer the quality of life that cramped city dwellers daydream about when they’re sitting in their drab, gray cubicles. We have the primo combination of climate, natural beauty and easy access to get OUT and do what Savannah does best – play!
Savannah’s numerous downtown parks and squares allow ample space for friends to gather, students to study and business types and travelers to leisurely lunch. And – of course there is the coastline! With the cool, relaxing beaches of Tybee, tidal creeks and rivers leading to it and the marshes surrounding – Savannah is a haven for water babies!
Savannah has oodles of parks, squares and outdoor gathering spaces including Forsyth, Daffin and Lake Mayer parks. Not only do we have over 20 public squares that serve as “outdoor living rooms” for neighbors and visitors in our Historic District, but among The Creative Coast’s state parks and historic sites are Skidaway Island State Park, Forts McAllister and Pulaski, and the Wormsloe Historic Site. These will appeal to both the nature lover and the history geek!
The largest park in Savannah, Bacon Park, offers 500 acres on the south side of town filled with soccer fields, an archery range, a 27-hole golf course and for the buff at heart – a weightlifting center! Bacon Park may be bigger, but Forsyth Park is easily one of the most recognizable landmarks of Savannah.
Smack in the middle of downtown, Forsyth, with its widely photographed fountain is a cultural landmark and its green space is home to ultimate frisbee, the SCAD Lacrosse team and even some more traditional games like kickball and flag football. Forsyth is also home to several annual outdoor events like the city-sponsored Picnic in the Park, the Savannah Shakespeare Festival and SCAD’s New Alumni Concert which has brought internationally-known artists like James Brown and George Clinton to perform a free and open show in the park.
Let’s face it – no mater how we slice it, the beach is one of Savannah’s greatest features. Cool and casual Tybee Island is a mere 12 miles from downtown and has 5 miles of beaches and is surrounded by over 400 miles of navigable waters snaking through almost 87,000 acres of tidal marshlands! This environment is a nature lover’s paradise – home to watersports of all kind including sport fishing, kayaking, sailing and even kitesurfing. But – if the water ain’t your thing – Tybee also entertains its visitors with quirky annual events like the Beach Bum Parade, Pirate Fest, the SCAD sponsored Sand Arts Festival and the Lei’bor Day Luau.
In addition to festivals and parades, Tybee also offers cultural and historical tours of nearby Fort Screven and the Tybee Island Lighthouse, or you can learn about the science of the sea at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.
